“Ironman Classic”

September 1,2,3 -  Labor Day Weekend – 3 days of racing

The HiLine Dragstrip in Malta Montana capped off a 3 day weekend of racing with their annual “Ironman Classic”.  They drew 92 racers from Montana, Saskatchewan, Alberta, North Dakota, and Wyoming.  A good time was had by all with a little Gamblers racing, the First Annual Golf Cart Drags, the 10.5” tire Outlaw class featuring the Rocky Mountain Door Slammers, some serious points competition, and the “finale” Ironman Race.   Some of the best racing to date was seen this weekend with optimum racing conditions.

The Ironman Competition:

The Junior Dragsters ran two classes.  The Beginners class was won by first time racer, Allison Lander from Sidney, Montana over Blake Lloyd from Glasgow, Montana.  The Advanced class ended with a brother/sister runoff with brother Ronald Stahl of Glasgow, Montana coming out over sister Alexis Stahl.

The Sportsman class featured local competition from Malta – Sandy Kovach and first time racer Shane Carnahan.  Sandy Kovach came out the winner with Shane Carnahan breaking out  by .004 seconds.

The No Box class came down to Dylan Bergos of Malta, Montana and Brittany Niederegger of Harlem, Montana.  This was not their first meeting in a final.  Dylan came away with the win running only .0069 seconds off his dial and a reaction time of .030.

The most excitement of the day came when the Box class ran their championship round.   Ken Solberg of Larslan, Montana was pitted against Steve Neiffer of Havre, Montana.   It was door to door down the track with Ken Solberg taking the stripe – but it didn’t end there. Shortly after crossing the finish line it is suspected that Neiffer had a brake lock up on him.  The car slid sideways, kissed the guard rail, and swapped ends.  After the dust and smoke settled Steve climbed out of his car a little shook-up but unharmed.  While the winners and runner-ups brought their cars to the winners circle for post race photos, Steve walked down pit road carrying a piece of his car with him for his photo in the winner’s circle and acceptance of his runner-up Ironman plaque.

Phillips County Motor Sports HiLine Dragstrip will close out the season on the weekend of September 22 and 23 with their “Big Dollar” $12000 payout competition and their annual Fundraiser Dinner and Auction at the City Hall in Malta.   For more information log onto www.pcmotorsports.org or call John Carnahan @ 406-390-6735.
