Phillips County Motor Sports regular meeting, August 14, 2008, Stretch’s Pizza
Phillips County Motor Sports met August 14, 2008, Thursday, at Stretch’s Pizza at 6:30 for those wishing to eat prior to meeting.
Due to the absence of President Kirkwood, Vice-president John Carnahan called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Members present were; Carnahan, Dennis Bebee, Denny Overcast, Rick Starkey, Jamie Ulrich, Floyd & Sharon Kindle. Guests were: Dan Waters, Tom Miller, & Lee Jones.
Sharon Kindle moved to dispense with reading the minutes and accept as written with a second by Rick Starkey and motion adopted.
Treasurer Jamie Ulrich gave the report.
Dennis Bebee moved to pay outstanding bills with a second by Sharon Kindle and motion adopted.
Old Business:
The TIIP grant for power at the track has been submitted for $25,000 with a 2 to 1 match. The decision will be made Oct 1, 2008.
Marty Lundstrom is to get rest of guardrail from Billings next week.
PCMS will continue to work on ideas for the website, i.e. the chat? Room, sales, booklets for the race days with pictures of cars and drivers, and working with new drivers or potential drivers.
April Peignuex has gathered door prizes for Sat & Sun, Aug 23 & 24; Mary Peignuex will handle the 50/50 drawings on Sundays with the exception of Sept 21, as the 50/50 will be Sat evening at the City Hall.
A cork board for the ladder board for races will be set up in the bottom of the tower to enable racers to see when and who they race.
New Business:
Denny Overcast will replace John Carnahan on Saturday, August 23 and Rick Starkey will replace Don Snell to apply VHT, tech and line up cars both race days with assistance from Tom Miller.
Discussion on advertising in Thrifty Nickel and Dennis Bebee suggested we see if we could get an advertiser to let us use some of his ad space. We advertise in Williston and Plentywood and have a contact in Minot. Jamie Ulrich suggested we work on getting articles in magazines, etc.
John Carnahan showed a mock-up of the Hi-Line Ford scoreboard sponsorship and mock-ups for Tilleman, North Star and Jamisons to secure second scoreboard sponsorships. At this time, there are no lane sponsorships.
Three more concrete signs and four vinyl signs have been sold.
It was agreed to set up a work schedule for erecting guardrails and everyone ‘bring a friend’ as this needs to be done for sanctioning. Luke Brown and Jason Ulrich will work on the mowing for the next race.
The scoreboards do work, the sensors were defective and new ones have arrived.
We will use the Kent Wasson’s concrete blocks for the city/county roadways during races.
Greg Kirkwood moved to order extra sensors for the track, (thru Mark V) for $187 plus shipping with a second by Sharon Kindle and motion adopted.
Dusty Dowell donated a used sprayer and motor and Kirkwoods will spray and use the weed eater on the track.
Dan Sisco gathered information on the FM transistor enabling anyone wishing to listen to the announcer (especially the drivers for when they are called) and Dennis Bebee moved to purchase a Model TX1805 system for a cost of $290 plus shipping with a second by Greg Kirkwood and motion adopted. Greg Kirkwood said he may have FM antennae and will have Dan Sisco check it out.
Lee Jones gave us information on “Racers Edge” magazine for articles and advertisement. Phone number is 1-877 racers edge. Rick Starkey is checking this out.
It was suggested Greg Kirkwood work with the Great Falls Tribune on getting our race info out as he did in 2007.
John Carnahan showed a poster (it will be on the web so check it out) for the Sept 6 & 7 race with a $10,000 purse. There are 11 sponsors, it is based on 80 cars with a $100 entry fee, and all extra money will go to the Sept 20 & 21 races. There are conditions for the race, see them on the web. Posters are being made and will be distributed throughout the state and into ND and Canada. There are seven 5-second cars from Gt Falls plus several from Billings and junior dragsters.
There being no further business to come before the board the meeting was adjourned at 9 p.m. The next meeting will be Sept 11, note this is a week early as the regular date falls too close to the next race.
